The launch of The Starling Centre for Just Technologies and Just Societies at Western University was held on Oct. 2 and 3, 2024. Housed in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies, the Starling Centre produces research and community programs that address the social impacts of digital technologies and AI on our everyday lives. Our goal is to make these technologies more transparent and empower citizens to take back some control over their digital rights. We celebrated our launch with an interactive exhibit, The Glass Room, on data and privacy that runs until Oct. 20; a keynote by noted author Desmond Cole addressing the impacts of AI on marginalized communities; a panel on AI, security and warfare; and a talk and workshop about AI and discrimination.
